We had a BIG weekend around here!
The bubble was officially burst and Hudson left Streeterville for the first time since he was born. I have to admit I was a little nervous about taking him in the car — I was picturing him totally freaking out and not being able to pick him up to console him! — but it actually went really well.
On Friday, Jason surprised me and came home a little early from work, so I seized the opportunity to get out of the house solo for a bit. I did a little shopping before the Friday afternoon madness had me running back into relative safety east of Michigan Avenue, then headed to Lyfe Kitchen for my favorite Autumn Spice latte in an attempt to blog or work on one of my illustrations. Like shopping, it was not happening (I am SO much better using my brain in the morning!) so instead, I picked up dinner supplies and headed home to my boys…. the best way to spend a Friday night. 😃
Saturday morning after coffee and a little Food Network time, I headed to a Pure Barre class. I’m doing the new member offer for one month of unlimited classes and so far I’m loving it. I’m confused nearly the entire class and I still have no clue if I’m tucking right (or at all?) but I LOVE the music, the super friendly instructors and fellow attendees, and I’ve been sore all week so I know something is happening.
That afternoon, we geared up for our first big car trip as a family. As I’ve mentioned before, we don’t have a car, so getting Hudson to a non-walking destination is no small feat. But my mom had planned a surprise birthday dinner for my stepdad, and as he’s one of my favorite people in the world, we couldn’t think of a better reason to rip the bandaid off and go. We got a Zipcar from a neighboring building and Jason headed out ahead of us to install the carseat base. When he was all set, he pulled the car up to our building, I brought Hudson down in the car seat carrier, popped it in the base and we were off!
Hudson slept nearly the entire way and we arrived at my parents’ house right around 4 for the big “surprise” moment and happy hour. I love spending time with my family and seeing Hudson with everyone made my heart so happy. It also made me so, so excited for the holidays!
We called it an early night but still got home after Hudson’s bedtime, which is one thing we really haven’t wavered on at all since he was born. Apparently that one hour REALLY threw our little guy off because it was a rough night, but that’s what coffee’s for, right? 😃
Sunday was adventure #2, so Jason took Hudson in the morning for a little dad bottle action and graciously let me sleep in. We headed to my best friend’s house to watch the Bears game, which in my case means enjoying the game day food and catching up with friends. (I asked Jason who won.. shameful.) I am lucky to have an amazing group of friends from college that still live in the area, and seeing how we’re all growing up with families of our own is crazy and so much fun. Inside, I think we’re all still holding red solo cups.
Hudson seemed to thrive on all of the activity, presumably because he’s held by his adoring fans the entire time. On Sunday, he slept for an hour and a half through the Bears game, about 15 people talking, and other kids playing and crying. Go figure, right? At home I’m tiptoeing around with the white noise machine on full blast and delaying starting the dishwasher so the beeping doesn’t wake him up.
Hudson is two months tomorrow (what?!) and I wouldn’t trade the last 9 weekends of quiet family time at home for anything. But this weekend definitely went a long way in proving that with a little bit of planning, getting out on the town is totally doable and worth the effort.
Hope your weekend was great, too!
